A Practical Guide to Organise Your Wardrobe

If you want to save time in the morning and feel more confident about your wardrobe, the first step is to organize it. Here’s how to do it effectively:

Step 1: Determine Golden Area

Before you start folding or sorting, take a moment to understand your wardrobe space. Not all areas are equally convenient.

The “golden zone” refers to the area within your natural line of sight and easy reach—where you can grab items without stretching or bending. This is where your most frequently worn, in-season clothes should go.

Higher shelves, which require a stool, and lower compartments, which require bending down, are considered “non-golden zones.” These are better suited for items that you wear less frequently or that are off-season.

Step 2: Categorise Clothes by Usage

Once you’ve identified your wardrobe zones, the next step is to sort your clothes based on how often you wear them.

Start by separating your wardrobe into two main categories:

  • In-season clothes: Items you’ll wear within the next 2–3 months
  • Off-season clothes: Items not needed right now

Place your in-season clothes in the golden zone for easy access.

Consider washing and drying off-season items before storage to prevent odours or mildew. Then, use appropriate storage tools, such as boxes or vacuum bags, to keep them organized in the non-golden zones.

Step 3: Adjust & Locate Clothes

Now that your clothes are in the right zones, it’s time to refine your organisation system.

Start with basic categories:

  • Tops (T-shirts, shirts, sweaters, hoodies)
  • Bottoms (pants, skirts)
  • Outerwear (coats, jackets)

Then, decide how to store each item:

  • Hang items that wrinkle easily or are structured (e.g. blazers, dresses, shirts)
  • Fold items that are stretchy or less prone to creasing (e.g. T-shirts, knitwear, hoodies)

This step helps you create a wardrobe that is not only neat, but also intuitive and tailored to your daily habits.

Before closing your wardrobe, rearrange your clothes based on how often you wear them. Place the clothes you wear most often and that go with everything in a prominent spot; put the clothes you wear less frequently a little further back. The same applies to pants.

Now that you know the system, it’s time to put it into action. Set aside an hour this weekend to give your wardrobe a refresh.
