What Do Air Conditioner Modes Really Do?

Aircond comes with a variety of modes to let people choose and control based on their requirements. Most people only ever use the default “cool” mode without fully understanding what others do. Learning how these modes work can not only make your space more comfortable but also help you save electricity and extend the lifespan of your unit.

Cool Mode

Cooling mode is the standard operating mode of every air conditioner. The unit operates at maximum power to lower the room temperature to the set point. Once the target temperature is reached, the condenser stops operating. Then, the cooling cycle restarts. This process is fast but uses a lot of energy.

Dry Mode

Dry mode was developed to reduce a room’s humidity and create a comfortable environment. The humid air is dried by the evaporator inside an aircond and then flows back out as dry air. The process is more energy-efficient than the regular cooling mode. It is suitable for use when there is no cooling requirement whereas only to remove moisture. For instance, rainy days. This mode can also help to prevent mold and unpleasant odour. However, dry mode cannot function as a dehumidifier because it leaves at least 60% humidity in the air.

Fan Mode

Fan mode makes the aircond work like a regular fan that circulates air in a room. Aircond compressor does not function while the fan runs continuously. The temperature and humidity inside a room remain unchanged. This mode helps ventilate the room when the temperature and humidity levels are acceptable and ensures fresh air circulation.

Heat Mode

Heat mode operates in the opposite way of the cooling mode. It pulls warm air from outside into the room. This mode is typically used during the colder winter months. In short, this mode is unnecessary in Malaysia since it does not have winter season. Heat mode consumes more energy than cool mode. After running for several hours, it can cause the air to become dry. It is recommended that you place a bowl of water in the room or use a humidifier when the heating mode is on.

Auto Mode

Auto mode allows the aircond to select optimal operating mode based on the room temperature and humidity. This feature is extremely convenient, automatically adjusting the temperature and fan speed to maintain an ideal indoor environment.

How to Set Your Ideal Mode

  •       Rainy day – Dry mode
  •       Humid weather – Dry mode
  •       After turning on AC– Cool mode then auto mode
  •       Room already cool – Auto mode
  •       Crowded room – Cool mode with higher fan speed

Selecting the appropriate air conditioner setting is only the first step. Knowing how to adjust it properly makes all the difference. Many users overlook the importance of fine-tuning settings. These settings include temperature, fan speed, and timer functions. Making small adjustments based on your environment and personal comfort allows you to maximize your air conditioner’s efficiency and avoid unnecessary energy waste.
