Common Household Allergens You Shouldn’t Ignore

Even if you rarely go out, if you find yourself sneezing often, having a blocked nose, or rubbing your itchy eyes, the reason may be closer than you think. Many household allergens are present in our homes throughout the year. They can trigger recurring allergy symptoms. Being aware of common household allergens is the first step toward creating a healthier living environment.

1.     Dust mite

Dust mites are very small, insect-like pests that feed on dead human skin cells and thrive in warm, humid settings. Dust mite cannot be seen with the naked eye. They primarily gather in bedding and bedroom textiles with mattresses, curtains, carpet and sofa. People allergic to dust mites experience allergic reactions due to proteins in dust produced from inhaling dust mite waste, urine or decaying bodies.

2.     Pollen

Pollen is a powdery substance produced by seed plants for reproduction. It is lightweight and can easily enters into indoor spaces and be inhaled into the nasal passages, triggering allergic reactions. Common pollen types include grass, weed, and tree pollen, which tend to appear during specific seasons. As an outdoor allergen, pollen can make its way into homes through open windows and doors or be carried indoors on clothing and pets. While pollen is mainly an outdoor allergen, certain indoor plants can also produce pollen that may affect sensitive individuals. Pollen allergy is commonly known as hay fever and is one of the most common types of respiratory allergies.

3.     Pet dander

Pet dander refers to shed skin cells from animals with fur or feathers. For instance, cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters. Pets without fur, such as fish, reptiles and amphibians are less likely to trigger allergic reactions. Pet dander is microscopic and in irregular shape, making it easy to spread through the air and stick-on furniture, bedding and fabrics. Furthermore, pet dander constitutes the most common source of pet allergies, with symptoms bearing a striking resemblance to hay fever.

4.     Secondhand Smoke (Formaldehyde)

Formaldehyde is a colorless and flammable gas. It has a pungent smell that can be detected at very low concentrations. It is used in the productions of wood, paper, plywood, glues and adhesive, paints and more. Formaldehyde causes allergies by irritating the mucosa of the respiratory tract, inducing chronic inflammation, damaging epithelial barriers, and increasing the body’s sensitivity to other allergens.

Secondhand smoke is a mixture of smoke from burning cigarettes and smoke exhaled by smokers. Harmful substances in the cigarette such as carbon monoxide and tar attach to the skin’s surface and can penetrate deeper layers. This disrupts the skin’s natural defense system. Secondhand smoke may also increase the risk of respiratory infections and lead to asthma, reduced lung function, and other issues.

5.     Mold

Molds are fungi. They are a natural component of the environment and can thrive wherever there is moisture and oxygen. In damp, poorly ventilated households, furniture becomes susceptible to mold growth. Rooms with high humidity such as the basement and bathroom create an ideal breeding ground for mold. Mold spores can enter the nose and trigger rhinitis symptoms, including asthma. They may even lead to allergic asthma.
